Welcome Back 😊

In this post I will be showing how to make two fun DIY projects that should be fairly easy to do.

As we know the trend of succulents and cacti are and have been very popular for the past year or so and it seems like its here to stay.

I got the idea for this project when I was browsing Etsy for a cute pin cushion and they were pretty pricy and they did not seem too complicated to make.

If you're like me you've probably bought a few (succulents/cacti) and still managed to kill them, then this is the perfect DIY project for you.

It requires a sewing machine and basic sewing skills and they are so affordable!

Materials needed:

  • Sewing Machine

  • Felt (whatever shade of green you like and pink for an accent flower)

  • Green Fabric of your choice (I used 100% cotton)

  • Thread & decorative thread

  • Needles/Pins

  • Pillow Stuffing

  • Small Terra Cotta Pot/Ceramic Pot

  • Glue Gun

Let's get started!

Pin Cushion

This first DIY is a pin cushion; the sewing machine is optional

  1. Trace out a circle on a piece of paper you want this circle to be about twice the width you want your final cactus to be.

  2. Place shape on felt and cut out. You only need to cut out one circle.

  3. Sew around the outer edge circle with a wide stitch (Or use a yarn needle and embroidery thread). Pull the thread tight to create a rounded pouch and stuff the pouch with some stuffing. Once you have it stuffed to your desired fullness, knot the thread to secure.

  4. Thread a long thread into your needle, knot the end, and come up through the middle of your puffy circle out through the top. Go around and down the sides and go back up through the middle again to create one of your sections. Keep repeating this motion, staggering the placement as you go until you have 8 evenly spaced sections and knot the end.

For the second cactus

  1. Trace out shape of cactus on paper (make sure openings are wide enough for stuffing)

  2. Place pattern piece on felt and cut (for this cactus you need to cut 2 pieces of felt)

  3. Thread needle with white thread and make 'x' shapes to resemble thorns (optional). I just think it gives it character 😊

  4. Place felt pieces together (bad sides together) and sew. I used a sewing machine (optional).

  5. Stuff with pillow stuffing (I used a chopstick to help with this step)

  6. Cut out flower in color of choice (optional)

These little pin cushions would make great gifts. Plus no watering required!

Sew off the ends and place a hook to transform them into key chains.

Pillow

This second project is super simple to make. The hardest part of it is stuffing the awkward shape of the pillow.

I recommend using a sewing machine for best results.

  1. Trace out a basic shape of cactus on a piece of paper or straight onto the fabric. I just traced out a basic cactus shape right onto the fabric itself (following the grain). Remember to leave 1/4" seam allowance

  2. Cut fabric pieces and trace flower piece following the shape of the curve of the cactus.

  3. Sew flower first (1/4" seam allowance) leave a small opening at the bottom of the flower. Trim to get as close to the seam and flip over to the good side. Stuff with pillow stuffing.

  4. Pin Pieces together and pin flower between the cactus pieces (good sides together).

  5. Sew pillow (1/4" seam allowance). When you get to the flower part be sure to only grab the curved bottom part of the flower.

  6. Leave 1/2" opening at the bottom (this allows us to stuff the pillow)

  7. Flip pillow over to good side and start stuffing! (I used a yardstick to help me stuff the pillow). This step is honeslty the most time consuming part of the project.

  8. Close off the bottom opening.

  9. Add decorative thread to resemble thorns (optional).

Again, this pillow would make a cute (and cheap) last minute gift.
